Flights to Sal have been made enormously quicker, cheaper and more comfortable following the recent opening of the island’s first international airport.
The Amilcar Cabral Airport, near Santa Maria on the south coast of Sal, has almost doubled traffic to Cape Verde and receives direct flights from Gatwick and Birmgham airports, while more schedules are due commence from Dublin, Belfast, Galsgow and Manchester in the near future. Carriers to Sal presently include Thomsonfly and Tui Fly. Travel time from most northern European airports to Sal is around 5½ hours. Cape Verde’s oldest international airport resides on the island of Santiago.
The Fransisco Mendes International Airport welcomes visitors from all over the world, but has particularly strong links with Portugal, England, France and Holland.
The busy twin-terminal installation also operates as the island nation’s hub airport and inter-island carrier TACV. Carriers to Santiago include Air Portugal, Tui Fly, Astraeus and Air Mediteranee. Travel time from most northern European airports to Santiago is around 5½ hours. Close to Cape Verde’s capital, Praia. Santiago’s airport has transport links, car hire, hotel reservations and airport parking.
Flights to Sao Vicente
Travel to Sao Vicente will very soon become much easier when the island’s first international airport is completed. Situated near Sao Pedro, the airport will open up direct links with the UK, Ireland and northern Europe. At present travel to Sao Vicente is possible by inter-island transfer at Santiago international airport. Travel time from most northern European airports to Sao Vicente will soon be around 5½ hours. Currently, air time is around 7½, using a variety of connections.

Travel to Boa Vista will very soon become much easier when the island’s first international airport is completed. Situated near Rabil, the airport will open up direct links with the UK, Ireland and northern Europe. At present travel to Boa Vista is possible by inter-island transfer at Santiago international airport. Travel time from most northern European airports to Boa Vista will soon be around 5½ hours. Currently, air time is around 7½, using a variety of connections.
