Cape Verde, investment HOTSPOT

Everyone is looking for a new holiday and investment hotspot with guaranteed sun, miles of beaches and unspoilt charm and culture. It’s a tall order but Cape Verde ticks all the boxes and their government is keen to welcome new visitors and settlers.

Portugal colonised the islands in the 15th century and although they became independent in 1970 they have kept stability and the best influences of their former rulers. The 10 islands are just 385 miles from Senegal and are influenced by African culture and crafts. Add to that mix, the best of Caribbean weather without the rain and monsoons, 965kms of white beaches and five hours direct flight time from the UK, and you can see why Cape Verde is the place to be.

Let’s have a closer look at some of the main islands, starting with those in the northern or Barlavento islands. Sal leads the way in tourism and is named after the salt pits that supplied the Portugese empire. A surfers and divers haven, Santa Maria is the main beach resort and Amilcar Cabral, the original international airport for the islands is in the centre of Espargos, the main town, in the centre of the island.

Sao Vicente is a mere 24km by 16km but is perfect for relaxed exploring by foot or bike, The main town is Mindelo and it also has the main port for Cape Verde, Porto Grande. Tourism is growing fast here and there is even a rare British intervention, the islands long established cricket team.

Boavista has some of the best beaches around, and shallow waters for great swimming, especially Santa Monica beach. Explore the rolling sand dunes or enjoy the many water based sports. The capital and port, Sal Rei has kept its old charm and ceramics are a speciality of the island.
Sau Nicolau has Cape Verdes highest peak, Mount Gordo, 1,304 metres. Tarrafal is the ferry and fishing port of this relaxed quiet island. It’s repelled pirates in the past thanks to a fort at Sao Jorge bay but now it is welcoming a new wave of tourists with a smile.

Pride of the Sotavento islands in the south is Santiago, which has a much more African flavour. The capital of Cape Verde, Praia, home of the new international airport is here and is alive with music in it’s cosy, busy streets. Full of contrasts, there is a rain forest at the centre of the island, a lovely historic city at Ciadade Velhe and a range of wonderful beaches.

Each island has a distinct character and you will be spoilt for choice. Rain is a novelty in Cape Verde and international and local travel links are growing all the time. The paradise of your choice is ready to welcome you.
