Why choose Fuerteventura

This is an island with one of the most relaxed lifestyles in all of the Canary Islands.
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the seven main Canary Islands, Tenerife being the largest.
Though it is considered the oldest of the islands in terms of formation and it was one of the first to be conquered by the Spanish, it has developed more slowly than some of its sister islands. In some respects, this has been intentional. The island’s planners have had the opportunity to watch the development of Tenerife and Gran Canaria and have tried to avoid some of the pitfalls experienced by them.

In terms of population, Fuerteventura is not nearly as densely populated as Tenerife or Gran Canaria. It also does not have the larger towns such as Los Cristianos and Las Américas on Tenerife or Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. Because of this, it has been easier for the islands government to create numerous nature preserves and parks where construction is forbidden. Another welcome restriction is that no new buildings may be built more than two storeys high.

The climate and weather on Fuerteventura is similar to that of the south of Tenerife. It is said that the name of the island means strong wind and indeed a slight breeze does sweep across it. This wind helps to account for one of the island’s most unique and striking features, the endless sand dunes. Another outstanding feature of Fuerteventura is its beaches. They are remarkable not only for their pristine beauty, but also for the fact that they are made of white sand. This is unusual because the islands were created by volcanoes and the other islands have naturally occurring black sand beaches. Fuerteventura also can lay claim to having the longest beach in Europe.
It also has more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year.

If you truly want to get away from it all, then Fuerteventura is the place for you. It is not heavily populated and part of its charm is that it is still very naturally Spanish. In fact, until very recently, there was not a single McDonald’s or Burger King on the entire island. There is a championship golf course that has been completed and four more golf courses are currently under construction. There are also plans in the works for an art gallery and an eco-museum. This is an island with one of the most relaxed lifestyles in all of the Canary Islands. You could quite literally spend your days doing nothing more than windsurfing, diving, sunbathing or what ever you love to do to relax.

In regards to investment, property in Fuerteventura has experienced over the last few years a 15% capital growth, making it one of the fastest moving property sectors in Europe. This is in response to several factors. First of all, investors are looking for new areas of development. Secondly, property prices are currently lower than on other islands. Last, but certainly not least, more people are finding the quieter lifestyle of Fuerteventura very attractive. Both off-plan and already built homes are available. You won’t, however, find many studios on Fuerteventura, as unlike it’s bigger sisters, space isn’t at such a premium and you’ll be amazed at how far your budget can actually stretch. The most popular types of dwelling that are purchased are apartments with two bedrooms townhouses and villas.
Fuerteventura is an island with a very different character from its sister islands. That is part of its charm. It also offers investors new and fresh opportunities. Take a closer look at what the island has to offer and see if it’s right for you.
